PROGRAMS > SERVICE-LEARNING IN TEACHER EDUCATION

A program whose goal is to infuse service-learning into teacher education programs across the state.

Institutes on Service-Learning in Teacher Education

As part of our effort to engage all of Florida's teacher education programs in the pedagogy of service-learning, FL|CC has co-hosted annual statewide institutes on service-learning in teacher education for the past three years. During this time, teams of faculty, students and administrators from over 20 institutions of higher education, and their partners (such as K-12 schools and school districts), have actively participated. During these institutes, campus teams worked with their partners to form an action plan to further the pedagogy of service-learning, not only in the collegiate classroom, but also in K-12 schools. The inaugural institute was held at the University of South Florida and FL|CC contributed a cash match of $50,000 that was used to provide implementation dollars to each team to assist in the execution of the action plans. While the initial efforts blended theory and best practices specific to service-learning in the teacher education discipline, this was succeeded by shifting the focus to more pragmatic and practical ways to integrate service-learning into the curriculum. As the institutes built upon each other, other resources and training opportunities followed in subsequent years. The second institute was hosted by Florida State University in October 2003. The third and most recent institute held in Pensacola Beach, explored methods of institutionalizing and sustaining this work; and it was funded primarily by a Florida Campus Compact award to the University of West Florida. The ultimate success of this work now rests in the challenge of integrating teacher education faculty across the state to create a long-term support system for innovation in the teacher education field. Planning for this effort began in earnest at a gathering of the stakeholders in June 2005.

The 2004 Institute, scheduled to be held at the University of West Florida, was delayed due to Hurricane Ivan.
