PROGRAMS: CONSULTING CORPS

The following faculty and staff from around Florida have graciously agreed to serve as members of our Consulting Corps. They will be available, as their schedule allows, to provide training and technical assistance to FL|CC members who request their assistance. We ask that you offer a modest honorarium of $250 per day plus travel and expenses to cover the cost of the consulting corps members. Melody Bowdon, Florida Campus Compact Consulting Corps member

Dr. Melody Bowdon

Melody Bowdon is Associate Professor of English at the University of Central Florida. She coordinates the Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing and the MA program in Rhetoric and Composition. Dr. Bowdon is an active researcher in the field of service-learning and is co-author of Service-Learning in Technical and Professional Communication. She regularly shares her work through articles in book collections and national journals and through presentations at national and international conferences. She was the 2005 recipient of the Gulf South Summit Award for Outstanding Contributions to Service-Learning in Higher Education and a 2005 finalist for the national Thomas Ehrlich Award for Faculty Engagement in Service-Learning. Currently she is conducting a statewide assessment of collegiate service-learning activities through her role as Florida Campus Compact Senior Faculty Fellow.



Richard Denning, Florida Campus Compact Consulting Corps member

Dr. Richard Denning

For over 20 years, Richard Denning has served as the Chair of the Engineering Technology Department at the University of Central Florida. Previously, he was the Head of the Math Department and Mechanical Engineering Technology Department at Southern Polytechnic State University for 12 years. As a professor, Dr. Denning has participated in a number of Service-Learning trainings and activities, and currently serves as the College of Engineering and Computer Science liaison and representative to the University of Central Florida Service-Learning Committee.

Professor Denning developed and taught the first service-learning course offered by the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida. The course, ETG 4950C Senior Design Project, is required for every senior in the Engineering Technology Degree program and was a major success. Dr. Denning is a professional engineer, and received his B.M.E and M.S in Mechanical Engineering and his Ed.D. in Higher Education.

Dr. Athena du Pré

Athena du Pré, Ph.D., is a communication professor at the University of West Florida, where she oversees more than 100 service-learning projects per year. Dr. du Pré has integrated service learning into a wide variety of courses involving leadership, health, workplace communication, interpersonal communication, public relations, event planning, fundraising, and media relations. As director of the Health Communication Leadership, Organizational Communication, and Leadership programs at UWF, Dr. du Pré has developed step-by-step guides to help students find and develop projects, assess clients' needs, develop project strategies, and create professional-quality presentations and portfolios to showcase their work. Dr. du Pré has presented her ideas about service learning at several national conferences and is happy to share instructional materials with other educators and community members.

Dr. du Pré is author of the books Communicating About Health: Current Issues and Perspectives (McGraw-Hill) and Humor and the Healing Arts (Lawrence Erlbaum) as well as numerous book chapters and journal articles about communicating effectively in health settings. du Pré is a former news reporter and public relations director. She received a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Oklahoma in 1995. Since joining the UWF faculty, she has received a Distinguished Teaching Award and a Teaching Incentive Program award.

Joe Follman

Joe Follman co-directs the Florida Alliance for Student Service (FASS) at Florida State University. FASS includes several statewide programs that engage over 50,000 students in meaningful service as a means an application of learning: Florida Learn & Serve, Community/Higher Education/School Partnership, FASS VISTA, and Title IV Community Service Grants. He is a frequent trainer at state, national, and international conferences as well as campuses. Three of his books, Learning by Serving, Comprehensive School Improvement and Reducing School Violence, have been disseminated to every Florida school. Joe has taught service-learning courses in the Adult Education Department at Florida State University.



Ossie Hanauer, Florida Campus Compact Consulting Corps member

Ossie Hanauer

Ossie Hanauer is the Director for the service-learning program at the Kendall and Homestead Campuses of Miami Dade College. This program, the largest at the college, serves more than 1,000 students and 40 faculty members per semester. She has trained faculty, students, administrators, and community partners in this pedagogy. Ossie has served as a consultant in the area of service-learning and civic engagement, and has facilitated service-learning workshops, including the We the People Project Citizen program in Washington, D.C., Campus Compact National Center for Community Colleges Conference, American Association of Community Colleges Annual Convention, and the Ninth Annual Florida Campus Compact Service-Learning Institute. Additionally, she has worked with college and university administrators around the country helping them incorporate service learning into their institutions. Ossie has also contributed to the American Association of Community College's A Practical Guide for Integrating Civic Responsibility into the Curriculum, and is providing training around the country on their behalf.

Ossie is a Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming with more than 30 years experience in the business world and is involved extensively in several community service projects. She graduated from the University of Miami, where she holds a Bachelor of Education degree.



Roger Henry, Florida Campus Compact Consulting Corps member

Roger Henry

Roger Henry has managed and directed service-learning programs for 30 years at Kent State University and Brevard Community College. He directs a large Center for Service-Learning, coordinates the service-learning curriculum, and teaches service-learning courses. Under his leadership, Brevard has become a national model for service-learning and community involvement innovation. Its publications and resources are used by hundreds of institutions and organizations across the country. He directed Florida Campus Compact for seven years, helping to build an infrastructure for service-learning in the southeast United States. Roger received his Bachelor's degree in public administration/government service and a Masters of Education from Kent State University.



Mickie Miller

Mickie Miller, who received a M.Ed., an Ed.S. and a Ph.D. degree in counselor education from the University of Florida, currently serves as Assistant Director of the UF Alliance and Lecturer in the College of Education. She has taught courses in the Department of Counselor Education and served as a mental health counselor and family therapist in private practice. Mickie has presented numerous workshops on stress management, substance abuse, and family counseling. She directs the UF Cascading Tutoring Project funded through the School/Community/Higher Education Partnership (CHESP) and the Florida Improving Reading Model (FIRM) project supported by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund.

The UF Cascading Tutoring Project began in 2001 with College of Education students mentoring and training high school students who tutored elementary students who prepared books for and read to preschool children. Cascading Tutoring teams are located at Miami High and Auburndale Elementary (Miami), Ribault High and Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary (Jacksonville), and Raines High and St. Clair Evans Academy (Jacksonville). The UF Cascading Tutoring Project was nominated for a 2004 Spirit of Service Award, and Mickie received the 2004 Outstanding Service Learning Faculty Member award from the Office of Community Service at the University of Florida. Lora Reed, Florida Campus Compact Consulting Corps member

Lora Reed

When it comes to service learning, Lora Reed has an eclectic and unusual background. She began her own (student) experience as an adult learner earning her masters degree in Applied Sociology. Lora worked with community stakeholders to develop a comprehensive employability skills program targeting homeless veterans and/or their families. She completed her M.A. thesis in Applied Sociology (Community Building and Conflict Management in the Workplace, Vermont College, now Union Institute) by performing service as part of the learning process. Upon receiving her M.A., Lora formed a small sociological consulting firm, Peace Offerings, Inc., based in Bradenton, Fl. Engaged in grant writing, training, organizational consulting, and workforce development, Peace Offerings has cooperated with public service agencies, non-profits, academic institutions, and businesses to pilot service learning as a means of community and workforce development. Specifically, the firm has encouraged the use of service learning as a win/win strategy for building students and 21st century communities.

Lora continues to work on service learning projects with stakeholders in student and workforce development. She teaches several Organizational Studies courses in the Program for Experienced Learners at Eckerd College. She also teaches General Sociology at Manatee Community College. All of the courses Lora teaches include service-learning components. Lora is completing her dissertation for a Ph.D. in Organization and Management (Capella University). Amy Simon, Florida Campus Compact Consulting Corps member

Amy Simon

Amy Simon is the Coordinator for Volunteer USF, the office of community service at the University of South Florida. As Coordinator, Amy administers community service federal work-study programs, co-curricular service-learning and community service programs. She advises a Student Leadership Board, which oversees alternative breaks program, dance marathon, best buddies, mentoring programs, national days of service and on-going community-based opportunities. Through her close work with faculty, Amy is able to assist them in the integration of service-learning into their curriculum.

Previously, Amy has worked with AmeriCorps programs and in nonprofit organizations. Her focus with community service is the development of student leadership programs and training to extend the scope of campus-based volunteer centers.



Dr. Trae Stewart, Florida Campus Compact Consulting Corps member

Dr. Trae Stewart

Dr. Trae Stewart holds a Ph.D. in International/Intercultural Education (University of Southern California). He is currently on faculty in the College of Education at the University of Central Florida (UCF).

Dr. Stewart's interests and expertise in service-learning include: teacher education, program/policy evaluation, social capital development, adolescent identity development, social justice, and multicultural/international education. He has published manuscripts, taught courses, and/or presented papers at international conferences that address these topics. He also sits on several publication review boards within the field. Dr. Stewart works primarily in qualitative and ethnographic methodologies.

Dr. Stewart's interest in service-learning is not limited to research and theory, however. He includes a service-learning module within his "Teaching Diverse Populations" (EDG 2701) course at UCF. In addition, he teaches "Youth & Society: Service Learning" for the Civic Education Project and the Center for Talented Youth each summer. This course enables gifted students to develop their own capacity as scholars, leaders, and citizens through an intense program that combines academic coursework and meaningful volunteer service.



Dr. Marsha Turner, Florida Campus Compact Consulting Corps member

Dr. Marsha Turner

Dr. Marsha Turner works for Florida State University at the Center for Civic Education and Service as the Director of Service Learning. At FSU, she works with faculty and community-based organizations to develop service learning opportunities for students. Her current research effort involves computerizing the student assessment program for the Service Learning Program at FSU. This has involved developing web-based pre- and post- assessment instruments that are delivered via email to students enrolled in service learning courses in order to determine learning outcomes associated with their participation in service learning activities. Research, evaluation, technology, student leadership development, and sustainable community partnerships are her partcular areas of interest. Previously, she worked at the Florida Department of Corrections as Volunteer Services Administrator and managed a statewide partnership program designed to recruit university student volunteers and interns for placement in the educational programs at razcorrectional facilities. She has twenty years of experience working in education in a variety of teaching and administrative capacities with the Florida Department of Education, University of South Carolina, and Texas Women's University. Her doctorate is in Information Studies from Florida State University.



Josh Young, Florida Campus Compact Consulting Corps member

Josh Young

Josh Young is the Director of Miami Dade College's Center for Community Involvement, where he oversees all service-learning and America Reads activities, as well as a myriad of other campus-community partnership activities. MDC's service-learning program now involves 130 faculty and 5000 students annually, and the College's America Reads program places and oversees 160 Federal Work Study tutors every semester. Josh has been with Miami Dade College since 1994 and served as a national service-learning mentor with the American Association of Community Colleges. He has extensive experience leading workshops for faculty, students, community partners, and administrators.

Josh served two tours with the Peace Corps in Mali, West Africa and Paraguay, South America, and ran summer community service programs for youth for four summers in the Dominican Republic with Visions International. He has a bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Virginia and masters degrees in Social Work and Public Administration from Florida State University.
