Florida Campus Compact hosted the Summer 2016 VISTA Program In-Service Training for 23 VISTA Members and 11 Summer VISTA Associates from July 13-15th at Stetson University in DeLand, FL. Over the course of three days, VISTA Members and SVAs participated in professional development and group teambuilding sessions. Both VISTA Members and FL|CC staff gave presentations to attendees, which included the topics of storytelling, networking and resume-writing, identity and privilege, and marketing for non-profits, to name a few. Participants were also offered an ‘Open Space,’ wherein they were able to speak freely about issues surrounding their AmeriCorps service with the hopes of continuing those conversations after the conclusion of the IST.
Before the close of the In-Service Training on Friday, attendees completed service projects at five different sites in the local DeLand community. VISTA Members and SVAs in their small groups gardened, pampered service dogs, put together hygiene kits, and wrote letters promoting literacy to children.
The final reflection and recognition ceremony wrapped up the IST, leaving participants with lasting inspiration and encouragement to return to their host sites and continue their hard work.
Here are a few photos from the In-Service Training. Thank you to all the participants, presenters, and Stetson’s Center for Community Engagement for making the IST such a success!
