Impact Project 2006-2008
Phase I - Impact
The Service-Learning Leadership Academy at the University of South Florida-Tampa is a joint project between the Center for Civic Engagement and Volunteerism at USF and the USF Collaborative for Children, Families, and Communities. The Academy connects students and community leaders with the Tampa Bay community in an effort to make real world changes by forming relationships, building partnerships, and using the talents and inputs from the community.
Project Highlights:
- Puppet show demonstrating the importance of nutrition to the children of migrant workers
- Provided services and resources for children aging out of foster care
- Participated in the East Tampa Front Porch initiative
- Technology Fair showcasing the latest designs to parents of autism
- Worked with at-risk youth to develop a community newsletter
- Connected schools, communities, and organizations to create positive changes for young girls
- Assessed and analyzed efforts to revitalize East Tampa

Project Leaders
Amy Simon
Amy administers community service federal work-study programs, co-curricular service-learning and community service programs and advising student leadership boards. Her focus is the development of student leadership programs and training to extend the scope of campus-based civic engagement. She has also participated in intensive leadership training through the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Judi Jetson
Judi has created hundreds of research partnerships for USF over the past 7 years, emphasizing projects which improve the lives of children and families. Her roles in the U.S. Small Business Administration and Land Grant Universities, public universities, and local governments across the United States have given her extensive experience in building relationships between researchers and community leaders.

Phase 2 - Impact
Following the success of the Service Learning Leadership Academy, USF Tampa is taking their campus to the next level in spring 2008. The Tools of Engagement project is an applied research project to create a concise, user-friendly report to provide practical information on implementing engaged scholarship practices at research institutions on a limited budget.
Project Highlights include:
- An extensive review of AAU universities and USF peer institutions and their existing tools or programs.
- Gathering data from faculty and administrators such as surveys, focus groups and interviews.
- Creating a database as a clearinghouse available to any anyone interested in campus-community collaborations.
- An ad hoc committee of USF faculty and administrators to facilitate the final recommendations to USF.
